Die Heimat is feminine and normally has no plural, since it names something singular and personal: the place you feel you belong. It carries more weight than "home town" or "country", closer to "homeland" but warmer and more intimate, the place that shaped you and the people you come from. Deutschland ist meine Heimat. (Germany is my homeland.) For those living abroad, Heimat becomes the place left behind but still felt. Ich vermisse meine Heimat. (I miss my homeland.) The root heim means "home", heard in Heimweh (homesickness), literally "home-pain."
